4 articlesNeeded is request-first — the opposite of a directory. Instead of browsing through pro profiles, you describe your job once and let available pros come to you.
Here's how it works:
- You submit one request describing your job, location, and timing — takes about 60 seconds
- Up to 3 available pros in your area are notified and can contact you directly
- Pros call or text you — you choose who to hire
- Completely free for customers, no account required
Yes — completely free. There are no charges, subscriptions, or hidden fees for customers.
Pros on the platform pay credits to contact you. You never pay Needed anything. When you hire a pro, you pay them directly for the work — that's a separate arrangement between you and the pro.
No account required. You can submit a request with just your phone number — no sign-up needed.
If you'd like, you can create an account to easily manage your requests and track responses. But it's completely optional.

Requests
5 articlesGo to the service page for what you need (e.g. /plumber), then click Send a request. You'll be asked to:
- Describe your job in your own words
- Set your suburb
- Choose your timing (today, this week, or flexible)
- Add your phone number so pros can reach you
The whole thing takes about 60 seconds. You'll get a confirmation by text.
You can't edit a request once it's been submitted — it's already been sent to available pros. However, you can cancel your current request and submit a new one with the correct details.
If pros have already contacted you, reach out to them directly to clarify.
Yes. Open the link in your confirmation text message to view your request status, then tap Cancel request.
Once cancelled, pros will no longer be notified or be able to contact you through this request. If you've already been contacted by a pro and decided not to proceed, let them know directly.
The more detail you include, the better the pro can assess whether they're the right fit — and the more accurate their initial quote will be. Helpful things to include:
- What specifically needs doing (e.g. "leaking mixer tap in the kitchen" not just "plumbing")
- Any relevant details — brand, age of appliance, type of issue
- Access considerations (e.g. third floor apartment, tight driveway)
- Whether you have any relevant photos you can share when the pro contacts you
Request expiry depends on the urgency you set:
- Today / Urgent — expires after 48 hours
- This week / Flexible — expires after 7 days
After expiry, no new pros can contact you for that request. If you still need help, submit a new request.
Getting responses
4 articlesResponse times vary by service and how many pros are available in your area. Most requests hear back within a few hours. For urgent or same-day jobs, response is typically faster as pros prioritise those.
If no one has contacted you after 24 hours, you can use the re-send feature (see below).
If you haven't heard back, you can re-send your request. Open the link from your confirmation text and tap Re-send request. This notifies a fresh set of available pros.
A few tips if you're not getting responses:
- Make sure your suburb is set correctly — pros match based on location
- Add more detail to your description — vague requests can be skipped
- Check that your timing is set accurately (urgent vs. flexible)
- Consider whether the service is available in your area — rural areas may have fewer pros
Up to 3 available pros can contact you for any single request. This is intentional — getting flooded with 15 calls isn't helpful. Three gives you real choice without overwhelm.
Pros see a summary of your job before deciding to contact you, so the ones who reach out are genuinely interested and able to help.
Just let them know directly — a quick reply to their text or call is all it takes. Something like "Thanks for reaching out, I've already sorted this one" is perfectly fine.
You can also cancel your request from the status page so no further pros are notified.
Hiring a pro
4 articlesThe choice is entirely yours. When pros contact you, you can assess them based on:
- How quickly and clearly they respond
- Their availability for your timing
- The quote or price they offer
- Any questions you ask them directly
Needed doesn't score or rank pros. We connect you — you decide.
Payment for the work is arranged directly between you and the pro. Needed is not involved in that transaction.
Pros typically accept bank transfer, cash, or card — ask them when they contact you. Always agree on the price before work starts.
Start by raising it with the pro directly — most issues can be resolved with a conversation. Clearly explain the problem and give them an opportunity to fix it.
Needed is a connection platform and is not a party to the work agreement between you and the pro. We're not able to mediate disputes or guarantee work quality. This is why we recommend:
- Getting a clear quote before work starts
- Checking whether the pro is licensed for regulated work (electrical, gas, plumbing)
- Paying in stages for larger jobs rather than upfront in full
If you believe a pro has acted inappropriately or fraudulently, contact us and we'll review.
Needed does not currently verify professional licences or certifications. For regulated trades where a licence is legally required — particularly electrical work, gas fitting, and plumbing — you should:
- Ask the pro for their licence number before work begins
- Verify it with the relevant authority (e.g. Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board; Electrical Workers Registration Board)
For unregulated services like cleaning, lawn mowing, or handyman work, licensing is not required.
